Those are autonomous regions (light yellow areas): Mongolia/Gobi Desert to the north, Qinghai, Xianjiang, and Tibet to the west. Mostly monks and farmers.
Also, mountains and deserts.
Qinghai used to be part of the Tibetan empire. And Xinjiang are where Uygurs are.
