The corridor running from Azerbaijan to Armenia and onward to European destinations has significant potential in terms of cargo transportation volumes, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said during the panel discussion titled “Open Corridor Policy? Deepening Trans-Caspian Cooperation” held in Munich as part of the Munich Security Conference, APA reports.

“Investments are already in place. We are talking about regional connectivity projects, not only railways but also fiber optics. We are currently working closely with our Central Asian partners on laying a fiber optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea, which will be completed this year. We are also thinking about new opportunities once peace is achieved with Armenia. The corridor from Azerbaijan to Armenia and further to Europe also has great potential in terms of cargo volumes. Azerbaijan is currently investing in railway infrastructure within its territory,” the head of state noted.

The President of Azerbaijan stated that the total length of the railway planned for construction and rehabilitation is 600 kilometers: “Once completed, there will be two expansions of the Middle Corridor passing through Azerbaijan, and this will benefit the West, the East, and, of course, the countries located in the South Caucasus.”
