The European Commission’s sudden decision to attend the Board of Peace meeting hosted by US President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday sparked strong reactions among members of the European Parliament. The EU will be represented by the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica. Although the EU is not endorsing this initiative and the Commissioner will participate as an observer, questions remain about the details of the Commission’s decision.
“I am appalled by the decision to send Commissioner Suica as observer to Trump’s “board of peace”, Javi López, vice president of the European Parliament and a MEP of the Socialist and Democrats group, posted on X. “This initiative in which autocracies and MAGA-fans come together undermines multilateralism, the role of the UN, and the necessary spirit of a just peace that the region needs and the Palestinians must be part of,“ highlighted López. “I sincerely hope this can be corrected as it is clearly against the EU’s values and interests,“ he added.
