I find it very hard to believe that Denmark has never won a medal in anything in the Winter Olympics.

I get that they don’t have mountains, but they’re not super far away from countries that do. You’d think they’d have one skater, skier, or someone who would have meddled once in something in the winter games.

  2. It is surprising to me Chile has never won anything in the winter olympics, considering that so many athletes around the globe come to Chile during our winter time to practice.

You would expect some of that know how tonget transferred.

I wanted to comment that the map is outdated because Kuwait won a single Gold in 2016’s rio de Janeiro summer olympics but I fact checked before posting and saw that their only famous athlete participated asan independent that year and promptly won gold for the independents

  4. Many people in Brazil were surprised that the gold they won this year was the first South American medal in the winter Olympics. Both Chile and Argentina have way more snow, mountains etc., so the opportunity to train is there.

They also would reasonably have the resources it needs to train world class athletes in at least a handful of winter Olympics sports.

Maybe the Brazilian medal will help get some investment into sports in the region, although both Chile and especially Argentina have much bigger problems at the moment.

  5. Really surprised by Denmark never winning any gold medal in the winter Olympics. Considering how culturally similar they are to Norway or Sweden (at least in my mind), isn’t Winter Olympic a huge thing in Denmark?

Chile and Argentina are surprising too, but it’s true that winter Olympics aren’t popular at all in iberoamerican culture (Brazil just won their first ever, Spain doesn’t have that many winter olympic medals and Portugal doesn’t have a gold either).
