In some areas there is over tourism where the locals have no place to rent because landlords make more money on Air BNB’s. There is also problems with obnoxious tourists treating locals like museum pieces.

1.5 billion tourist, implying these seven regions get close to an average of about 65 million each?
I wonder how the hell Croatia became so popular as a tourist destination. If you said you were going to Croatia for a coastal holiday people would laugh in your face in the ’90s. Was it because of Game of Thrones? AFAIK King’s Landing, Meereen etc were all filmed in Croatia?

I visited Croatia in 2005 and the country was still recovering from the 1990s civil war. There were frequent power outages, and the hotel industry was minimal in historical cities (but already well established in beach areas).
The growth in tourism in Croatia has been very impressive. The number of tourists doubled in 20 years.
It’s a country with a beautiful coastline and a LOT of historical buildings. It’s located in a very accessible region (right in front of Italy… and you can take the ferry, it’s fast). It’s an ideal tourism destination.

Interesting fact: due to the many coves, capes and islands, Croatia has a coast of a length of around 5800-6200 km (sources differ). To compare, the whole of Italy has around 7500-8000 km. Much larger country, but much “smoother” coast.
That is to say: there’s a bit of room, despite Croatia being relatively small…

As Italian, Veneto I think is completely out of place in this map, Veneto capital is Venice, but it has a bit more than half the tourist of Rome (20/30 millions in Venice VS 30/40 millions in Rome) .
Also even if we consider “arrival” and not “destination”, Veneto doesn’t have any international airport (Italy biggest airports are in Milan and in Rome)
So I don’t understand how this is calculated…

30% claim seems to be complete bullshit, as usual in this sub.
In 2024 there were about 1.45 billion international tourists, so 30% would be 435 million! Combined those territories got maybe 170 million or so last year:
– ÃŽle-de-France = 50M? I’m not sure as I see some sources claiming about 50 million, but also others stating Paris proper only got 18 million, so even with Disneyland + normal tourism in non-Paris parts I’m not sure if that’s right.
– Catalonia + Balearics and Canaries = 51 million (20, 15.7 and 15.7M respectively).
-Bangkok = 30 million.
-Veneto = 22 million.
-Adriatic Coast = probably about 17 million (over 18 million for Croatia until September last year).
California gets 270 million tourists and Florida gets 140MM tourists a year.
