Since the election of the Government until today, we have 23 new direct flights, 3,5 million passengers have passed through the Ohrid and Skopje airports, this year, I expect Skopje airport to be the leader in the region with growth and to exceed 4 million passengers, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Aleksandar Nikolloski, commenting on government policies in air transport.

As reported by the Ministry of Transport, he emphasizes that the Government has launched a serious policy to attract new airlines and lines, considering that North Macedonia is landlocked and airports are the only exit, and more tourists and more people come here for business, and opportunities for Macedonian citizens to travel.

“What I am proud of is that since the election of the Government until today we have 23 new direct flights, namely airlines, the latest of which are to Alghero – Sardinia and Palermo – Sicily. What makes me happy is that 3,5 million passengers have passed through both airports, Ohrid and Skopje. If you look at the fact that North Macedonia has 1.8 million inhabitants, then it is clear that it is much higher than the population we have and if anyone doubted, this year Skopje airport will be the growth leader in the former Yugoslavia region, which is a matter of pride, considering that Zagreb, Sarajevo and Belgrade are also larger cities than Skopje, which is an added value”, said Deputy Prime Minister Nikolloski.

He adds that direct talks have begun with Saudi Arabia to establish air transport between the two countries, which will further expand the flight network for North Macedonia.

“I expect that from there we will also announce direct flights to Skopje and Ohrid airports and we will continue with this policy of stimulating airlines. I expect that this year we will exceed 4 million passengers, which will be an absolute record,” emphasizes Deputy Prime Minister Nikolloski.
