A fire has broken out in the gymnasium at a high school on Auckland’s North Shore this afternoon.
Fire and Emergency NZ responded to the blaze at Northcote College at 12.17pm with crews attending from Silverdale and Laingholm.
Northcote College confirmed there was an “active fire” in the school’s sports pavilion.
“All students have been evacuated to the other end of the school and are safe. We are waiting for further direction from the Fire Service and will update you as we can.”
A video taken from the field shows large flames coming from the block and plumes of smoke billowing into the air.
Auckland Transport said an “emergency services incident” on Onewa Rd between Lake Rd and Birkenhead Ave was causing delays.
The mother of a student at the school told 1News her son was “really shocked” by how “large and aggressive” the fire was.
“He told me there was lots of black smoke and flames.”
