ArianeGroup, responsible for the M51 SLBM, is discussing a partnership with Germany for a new generation land-based medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM).

France’s ArianeGroup, which is responsible for the production and upgrades of the M51 family of SLBMs of the French Navy, is in talks with Germany for a joint development of a new MRBM, according to a report from Germany-based Hartpunkt.

It is stated that the new MRBM has a range requirement above 1000 km. The scaled model for the missile shows a jettisonable tip section that hints at either a manoeuvrable re-entry vehicle (MaRV) or a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV). Considering there are no tests of a HGV in Europe yet, MaRV as a closer solution seems more possible for the MRBM. However, a HGV should not be ruled out, as France is a notable investor in Europe when it comes to hypersonic weapons.

China has a comparable example of a MaRV-fitted MRBM as the DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile. The MaRV that can adjust its trajectory with fins and onboard seekers is stated to be able to engage aircraft carriers.

MRBM development is one aspect of Europe’s changing approach towards land-based missiles. Previously, land-based missiles have been kept at a defensive stance as various types of coastal defence missiles. However, the recent shifts in politics have changed the mindset towards self-sufficiency in deterrence alongside defence. Another example of this change can be given as the development of a land-based variant for the MdCN (Naval SCALP) cruise missile by France and MBDA, exploring an MLRS-compatible cruise missile.
