Forgive my ignorance, but why does it look like this? Why is oil in this pattern?

Proven reserves? Probable reserves? Or possible reserves?

Michigan? Really? You mean draining all the oil from the crankcases of unsold cars?
West Virginia? Why are those poor people still digging up coal when they could be drilling for oil?

This makes it appear as if there are entire states that have a contiguous underground layer of oil under the whole are. I think if that were the case it would be hard to miss, due to the stickiness, and the flammability.

I don’t think these are oil reserves, but fossil fuels in general. A lot of these are coal depositasÂ

Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Alaska and the Beaufort Sea don’t count? Offshore reserves for just NL are pushing 125 Billion barrels.

No source and dubious information. The entire state of Michigan? Eastern Nebraska?

Sir, there is some country without nukes above our oil, sir!

Is the data available to do the same map but with oil type. Candian oil and US oil aren’t the same and the driver behind the US importing oil from Canada and Mexico rather than processing their own.
