While an RBI double in the bottom of the second cut it to 10-8, Wade and King each launched solo shots in the third for the 12-8 lead. A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the third wasn’t enough to close the gap, and Spain Park won with the time limit expiring.
Wade was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs while Thompson finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs. Abby King earned the win by not allowing an earned run in her 1.1 innings of relief.
The next day against James Clemens, a scoreless first gave way to a solo shot from King to start the second for the Jags. The Jets tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, but two runners in the top of the third allowed Spain Park to take a 4-1 lead off a Reagan Roberts ground-out and back-to-back singles from Thompson and King.
The Jags pulled away from there in the top of the fourth as Provost, Wade and King each scored runs with singles. An error at home on the final single allowed another run to cross and Spain Park to take an 8-1 lead. The next inning saw Provost capitalize on a lead-off walk with a one-out RBI single.
James Clemens cut the deficit to 9-3 on the final two at-bats of the game, but it was too little, too late.
King went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run while Wade finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Provost was 2-for-3 with two RBI. King was also the winning pitcher by going four innings with three hits, one run, two walks and four strikeouts.
The rematch against Athens saw Spain Park take the lead off a Roberts solo shot in the bottom of the first, and Whittaker doubled up that lead with an RBI double later in the inning.
A walk, single and bunt loaded up the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second, and a bases-loaded walk increased the lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Thompson brought another run home with a single, and King followed that up with a two-run single for the 6-0 lead.
An RBI groundout following an error in the top of the fourth was the only offense Athens could muster, and the Jags won 6-1.
King went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and a run, and Provost earned the win with three shutout innings while striking out four and giving up just one hit.
From there, Spain Park lost to Hartselle, scoring five runs in the top of the first before the Tigers cut the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning. More offense allowed the Jags to extend the lead to 9-3, but nine runs in the bottom of the second sealed the 12-9 win for Hartselle.
Spain Park then defeated Gardendale 13-8 on Tuesday, Feb. 24 to improve to 5-1.
