Iceland has responded with humour after shoppers spotted a spelling slip with the Middlesbrough branch’s new signage. The supermarket’s Cleveland Centre storefront has recently undergone a makeover.
But shoppers were quick to spot a blunder at Iceland’s ‘Middlesborough’ store. The extra ‘o’ led to a tongue-in-cheek social media post as the team paired up with nearby opticians, Specsavers.
Members of staff from Iceland and Specsavers can be seen shaking hands below the misspelled sign with the caption “always great to meet fellow local businesses…” Specsavers responded in the comments: “Lovely to come and see you today. For no reason at all…”
The blunder ‘banter’ online has been met with a wave of responses from Teessiders. One woman wrote: “I’m dyslexic and still managed to spot the spelling mistake.” Another posted: “Where is this, I have never heard of this place before.”

One follower wrote: “Genius. Give the manager a pay rise.” While another said: “Well played banter for a mistake.”
Iceland has confirmed the sign is due to be replaced on Thursday, February 26. A spokesperson for the frozen foods chain said: “The supermarket brand paired up with their nearby Specsavers branch team for a lighthearted exchange on social media, taking the mix‑up in their stride.”
