  1. Switching sides mid-war saved them, like it helped Romania regain Transylvania (except that we lost some Soviet border regions permanently).

Luckily for us, we are not so obedient and disciplined as the Germans are. Maybe this makes our country less organized and efficient, but during WW2, for us it only took the Americans and British to land in Sicily for losing faith in Fascism and Mussolini. In Germany, the story was really different.

  3. Why is the Dodecanese included but not the Libyan coast? At the time, coastal Libya had already been incorporated into Italy and was treated more or less like regular provinces.

  4. Italy got off easy from being a complete and total failure in WWII (up until they switched sides and hanged Mussolini, of course).

Yeah ok but this map seems to forget those small territories called Lybia and the whole Horn of Africa (albeit Somaliland remained italian until 1965)

  6. The greatest win for Italy was keeping Trieste, by far the most valuable port in the Adriatic sea. It’s really surprising if you consider that the whole surrounding region was given to Yugoslavia.

  7. A few weeks ago I went to Vallée Étroite, a tiny valley between Bardonecchia and Névache in the French Alps that was part of the handover. Although it is technically french territory, most of the road signs are of the Italian type, and all phones have are connected to the Italian network (with a +39 prefix to boot). We read that all private land there is also owned by Italians.
