  1. Why is this being given so much airtime?

Everybody needs to get a fucking grip. The state of the world right now and the media are focusing on a word being spoken on TV, Jesus Christ.

  2. The average person doesn’t give a toss about this overblown event. Media making it huge, LBC was talking about it non-stop.

Get over yourself and discuss some real news, ffs.

I was on the fence with this thinking storm in teacup, but they essentially put a hot mic infront of him, from this article.

He even felt the need to exclude himself and leave as couldn’t stop.. A love microphone in front of someone with involuntary tics. Wow

Sorry for this guy and obviously anyone who felt the pain of such words being broadcast, and re broadcast..

Seems there was a massive over sight at BBC.. Or trump has negotiated the terms of his suing campaign to include payment on the form of random distractions and societal divisions at a whim..?

On that note. Remember epstein and all the pedo elites they want you to forget.. Just like the Panama papers.. And the paradise ones? I forget.. So many things brushed under the carpet and lost from public consciousness..

The BAFTAs and BBC had a duty of care to Michael, Delroy and John and they somehow managed to fail all 3. Horrendous.

  5. BBC News falling over itself to be impartial by being the biggest source of stories criticising the BBC as usual.

  6. People should work harder to shut up and stop moaning about **** all. Context IS important, it might not be to right wing fools or ignorant morons but in reality it is and the manipulation of reality by leaving out context is partly why the world is so ****ed at the moment.

  7. BBC News always love to lay it on with a spade when it’s criticism about themselves. Presumably in part to stop the daily mail slagging them off for not criticising themselves enough. I think several days reporting on this is more than enough

Studio Canal asked the BBC to make appropriate provisions for John and edit out any swearing. The BBC then stuck a live microphone in front of John during the ceremony.

Then, when John had his swearing tic in front of the presenters, Warner Brothers asked the BBC to edit out the profanities on behalf of the presenters. The BBC said they would do so and they didn’t.

    See a theme?

The BBC and BAFTA’s either have some deeply obtuse people working for them, or even worse, they did this on purpose – turning John into a sideshow and making a sensation of putting the presenters on the spot. Maybe for cheap publicity and replay.

Hmmmm – as the BBC were extensively briefed about John and his condition, but still managed to fail him and subject him to international scorn, could it be said that they failed in their duty of care?

Ive been subjected to racial abuse: I know how it feels. But this was outwith John’s control and it demonstrates precisely what he has been campaigning for – greater awareness and understanding.

my heart goes out to him and I hope he is ok.

    They should have.

It was in their power to prevent. All this does is create stigma and highlight insensitivity

  11. Disagree. It’s arguably created more awareness about Tourette’s than anything else other than South Park in the past 30 years. Shit happens. Explain it. Everyone understands (or chooses not to). More people develop some empathy (hopefully). The people who get outraged are shown to lack empathy (as per usual). What’s wrong with that?

I would like to clarify that whenever I see another headline on this and shout “fuck!”, it is not because I have Tourette’s…

  13. dont_press_report on

Especially considering they worked so hard getting rid of the free Palestine chant

The people that still pay for the BBC are the ones to blame.

  14. They left it in deliberately because they knew it would do more than anything else to get people talking.

  15. HornyJailOutlaw on

Feels like a Nick Mullen riff. What about, there’s two Black people presenting an award, but there’s a guy with Tourette’s in the audience.

  16. It’s been said before and I’ll say it again.

If effort was taken to edit out “Free Palestine”, then effort should have been made to edit out the tick/slur. It’s embarrassing for everyone involved to include it in, when an edit could have/should have been made to remove it.

And now as a result this whole debacle becomes another needlessly politicised event.

  17. WhatsThePlanPhil95 on

It’s more of an outburst than a slur, I mean, he didn’t consciously think of and direct the word at anyone.

The president of the USA actions have been sane washed, it’s been seen as just another day for Trump from him posting a racist video of Obama but stuff like this, a man with tourettes, an actual condition, is getting way more attention.

  19. So the media kick up a fuss about this but when a Reform or Restore idiot says something blatantly racist for the upteenth time there’s not a peep from them. Fuck em.

  20. Many of the people in this sub were defending the decision to leave it in the edit. Citing nonsense reasons about awareness at the expense of the two hosts

    What is your response now?

  21. They had a 2 hour delay and clearly quite capable of editing out other statements made during the show, so I’m not buying for a second that leaving the slur in was in anyway an accident on their behalf.

John’s been getting insane levels of hate over it, so even if their intent was to “educate”, it wasn’t their place to expect John to play a role in that at the expense of his own wellbeing. Neither was it fair to expect the black community to dismiss and put aside their own feelings or have to shoulder the fallout stemming from this.

The whole situation benefitted no one but BBC in the form of clickbait and outrage which is just abhorrent. The blame lies solely with them and they utterly failed in their duty of care.

  22. I mean, he’s right isn’t he? Considering the BBC somehow had the time to edit out a pro Palestine message, but they left his tic in? I just don’t get it

  23. They invited someone with Tourette Syndrome to the audience of a live, televised show that includes audience reaction as part of the show. He did something that people with Tourette’s sometimes do. That was heard, very briefly, as part of the show.

It is no different to someone with visual impairment being helped to their seat, or someone in a wheelchair asking people to move so they can get through. The BBC shouldn’t make a point of showing those things, it isn’t what the evening is about. But if the cameras get a glimpse of something like that, it isn’t the end of the world. It is just a moment in the life of a disabled person.

  24. Nobody gives a fuck about what he said with his condition. Literally nobody is on the other side of this issue.

  25. Jazzlike-Joke-1389 on

The whole situation shows how little understanding or empathy people have when it’s a word they consider offensive and suddently the person is faking it or racist or it doesnt matter that they cant control it.

  26. Thats a bit unfair to say they need work harder when there are editing a three hour + live recording into a two hour broadcast from a trailer pretty much in real time.

That being said I wonder if this was not a simple communication error because there were two slurs but only one was really noticeable and that was the one they didn’t edit out so maybe they were only told to edit out one slur?

  27. Throwaway_toupee11 on

Feel sorry for the guy, tourettes is a horrible condition.

Yes the word he said is awful and its triggering but FFS get a grip, the guy wasnt saying it on purpose.
