At the meeting on February 25, the Lithuanian government approved the updated national security strategy, which will now be considered by the Seimas.
The document emphasizes the existence of an existential threat to the security of the country and the entire Euro-Atlantic community, given the likelihood that by 2030 Russia could acquire the capabilities to wage a full-scale conventional war against NATO.
Special attention is paid to threats from the intelligence services of unfriendly countries and to potential aggressive actions by Belarus toward European neighbors.
They also report on challenges and threats related to the rapid development of technologies and digitalization, as well as risks arising from vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure.
Key Priorities and Tasks
The strategy defines a number of tasks: strengthening the army, strengthening collective security guarantees and Europe’s overall defense capabilities, building a national threat assessment and early warning system, strengthening the integration of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union into the national defense system, and working on economic security. It also mentions policies to stimulate birth rates.
The document will next be considered by the Seimas of Lithuania.
The previous version of the national security strategy was approved in 2021.
It is expected that discussion in the Seimas will help outline Lithuania’s security vectors and strengthen cooperation with European partners in the context of defense and regional stability.
