LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is set to deliver her final State of the State address on Wednesday, marking the last such speech before she leaves office early next year. As she prepares to exit the political stage, Whitmer is expected to focus on issues ranging from infrastructure to the economy, according to political analysts.
John Clark, a political science professor at Western Michigan University, anticipates that Whitmer will use the address to bolster her Democratic colleagues. With the party aiming to maintain control of the governor’s mansion and the Senate while also targeting the House in the upcoming midterm elections, Whitmer’s speech may play a strategic role.
“She doesn’t have to worry about preparing for a reelection campaign, but at the same time, she’s got things that she wants to get done,” Clark said.
Clark told News Channel 3 that while Whitmer is unlikely to endorse a successor at this stage, her address could set the tone for the Democratic agenda.
Whitmer is likely to revisit familiar topics such as Michigan’s road infrastructure, a long-standing issue in the state. Additionally, she may address recent contentious topics like banning cell phones in schools. The governor has also recently introduced her budget proposal, which could feature prominently in her speech.
“I suspect she will do what she can to help whoever the eventual Democratic nominee is going to be,” Clark said. “I’d be really surprised if she made an endorsement at this point, but you never know.”
In response, Republican House Speaker Matt Hall expressed skepticism about any major announcements regarding Whitmer’s future during the address. Speculation has arisen about a possible presidential run in 2028, but Whitmer has hinted that she will not pursue the White House.
“I think the best thing the governor can do to set herself up for a successful future is to really let’s end this year with a major accomplishment,” Hall said. “You know, something that really dramatically lowers property taxes, lowers energy bills. Let’s do something bold together. “
Whitmer’s address is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. News Channel 3 will stream the address.
