Swiss newspaper NZZ interviewed the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, who, among other things, spoke about plans for investment in railways.

While he was talking about this topic, the journalist notices Kurti’s SBB watch and says;

…You are also wearing an SBB (Swiss Railways) watch.

“Yes, I really like this watch. It is a gift from the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and former President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Berset,” says Kurti.

But is it also a sign that you want to invest specifically in railways?

“Yes. Railways are green and safe. We want to create a railway connection between Pristina International Airport and the capital city of Pristina. We know that there are 27 direct flights between Pristina and Switzerland during the summer months, July and August – to Basel, Zurich and Geneva,” Kurti said.

The railway could also improve Kosovo’s international connections.

“Absolutely. Looking at a map of Europe’s rail network, it is clear that Kosovo is at a structural disadvantage within the Balkans. The so-called Corridors 8 and 10 bypass our country. However, the north-south link in the Western Balkans, Railway Line 10, could connect us – especially with Greece. Traffic is growing again. This time, we don’t just want to manage it, but to invest in it strategically. With Swiss expertise – especially in the rail sector – and with Switzerland as a friendly partner country, we can effectively combine work ethic, specialist knowledge and investment,” Kurti said, among other things.
