Ambassador Paruyr Hovhannisyan, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has met with David Nanopoulos, Chief of the UN Treaty Section, to formally deposit Armenia’s instrument of ratification for the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ).
The agreement, adopted under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, aims to ensure the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, commonly referred to as the high seas.
Armenia signed the agreement on June 9, 2025, and with the deposit of its ratification instrument, has now become the 86th State Party to the treaty.
