Germany’s Bundestag approved the German-Austrian air security agreement, which aims to improve cross-border control of potentially dangerous civil aircraft on Thursday.

The agreement was signed in the German town of Berchtesgaden in December 2022 by the then defence minister Christine Lambrecht and her Austrian counterpart Klaudia Tanner.

The agreement facilitates the exchange of information on the air situation as well as the cross-border escort and identification of suspicious aircraft and drones. It means interceptor aircraft are also allowed to pursue aircraft across the border.

Germany has already concluded similar agreements with all other neighbouring countries.
