Political scientist Melazim Koci has said that taking the country to elections due to the failure to elect a president would also delay a reported American plan for recognition by Serbia.
He stated that there is a possibility that Serbia will be asked with an ultimatum to recognize Kosovo. And according to him, if the political class drags out this process by leading the country to new elections, it would be unforgivable for them.
“If Kosovo goes to the polls, I think it will be unforgivable for this entire political class. No one can be amnestied, proportional to the number of mandates in the Assembly. The responsibility of Vetëvendosje cannot be equated with AAK. This time it will be unforgivable for a very simple fact. For external developments. I am not talking about internal developments. We are a modest society, we can live with higher, lower salaries, with one less highway, but there are speculations, assumptions and claims that an exclusively American plan is being drafted to resolve the Kosovo-Serbia relationship, ultimately focusing on the recognition of Kosovo by Serbia. It would be the first time that Serbia is finally being told to recognize Kosovo. If due to political games in Kosovo, calculations, and maneuvers, that issue remains and will drag on, I think this would be unforgivable for the political class. There is a lot of talk in the Balkans but also abroad that there could be an American plan, unilateral, that is, without the EU,” he said on KTV’s “Konfront” on Thursday.
According to him, Kosovo is only required to be ready to advance in this report.
However, he said that there may also be demands for Kosovo.
“All we need is to be ready. I fear that in that project, if it stands, there may also be demands for Kosovo and someone may be calculating that it is better to drag out that issue. If the focus is on recognition – it will be a miscalculation,” he concluded.
The fact that the US is preparing something like this was also mentioned on Thursday by the former Serbian ambassador to America, Nebojša Vujović. He said that Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, during his visit to the US in recent days, was informed about the agreement proposed by America for the recognition of Kosovo.
“Đurić was invited to Washington so that Rubio, on behalf of the US Government and President Donald Trump, could inform him about a secret and binding agreement to recognize Kosovo’s independence. This was the main purpose of Đurić’s invitation to Washington. Every day, step by step, Serbia is getting closer to formalizing and recognizing Kosovo as an independent state,” Vujović told the “Beta” agency. “By signing a binding agreement to recognize Kosovo, Trump would achieve a great success, while at the same time dealing a blow to the European Union and Russia. On the other hand, this suits Vučić because it would buy him time to remain in power. With this, Vučić would receive a tacit consent to the closure of independent media, while also postponing the imposition of US sanctions due to corruption, election manipulation and disregard for the rule of law, according to the Western Balkans Democracy Act, approved by the US Congress.”
These claims have been denied by Serbian officials. President Aleksandar Vučić has said that the issue is “unthinkable.” Djuric has also stated the same.
