UTICA, N.Y. — The City of Utica honored Bosnian culture and independence with a flag raising ceremony.
Utica Mayor Mike Galime presented a proclamation at Utica City Hall recognizing the important roles Bosnian-Americans have played in the city.
Bosnians make up one of Utica’s largest refugee populations with more than 8,000 people now living in the City.
“The United States is my adopted country. This is the country that gave me refuge, that gave me everything when I needed the most. Bosnia is part of my past. I like to say that is my mother. She gave me birth, while the United States adopted and raised me,” Sandro Sehic, secretary of the Bosnian American Community Association of Utica, said.
March 1 will mark the 34th anniversary of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s independence.
