The Armenian Foreign Ministry has commemorated the victims of the 1988 Sumgait massacres, honoring the memory of hundreds of Armenians who were killed during the violence in the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic.

In a statement shared on social media, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the days of remembrance serve as a moment to reflect on the suffering endured by victims and the mass displacement that followed. According to the statement, around half a million Armenians were forcibly displaced as a result of the events.

The Foreign Ministry underlined that remembrance is not solely about recalling past tragedies, but also about reaffirming a broader commitment to universal values.

“Remembrance is not only about reflecting on the past,” the statement said. “It is a reaffirmation of our shared responsibility to uphold human rights, reject hatred and hate speech in all its forms, while working steadfastly toward reconciliation and lasting peace.”
