Slovenia-based Arex is producing Kalekalıp’s KMG556 light machine gun chambered in 5.56×45 mm NATO ammunition as AMG556 in the European market under licence.
Janes Editor Amaël Kotlarski photographed Arex and Steyr’s AMG556 light machine gun (LMG) at the EnforceTac 2026 event, which has the emblem of Kalekalıp on it, pointing out that there is a licensed production of the KMG556 LMG aimed at the European market.
This would not be the first time a second party is locally producing KMG556, as EDGE Group’s Caracal is producing the LMG under the name CLMG556.
Another instance of a local production/distribution of Kalekalıp’s firearms was spotted in Kazakhstan, under Ar-Namis LLP. The Kazakh firm is offering the KNG-C5 CQB folding stock carbine with a longer 11” barrel and a suppressor compared to the baseline KNG-C5 with a 7.5” barrel.
KMG Family of Kalekalıp
KMG556 is among the members of Kalekalıp’s KMG line of LMGs available in 5.56×45 mm and 7.62×51 mm ammunition. KMG556 and KMG762 are general-use variants with an interface identical to FN Minimi.
Additionally, Kalekalıp has developed the KMG CL line, also in two calibres as compact machine guns for units demanding high mobility.
KMG556CL with a 10.5” barrel and an empty weight of 5.6 kg is considerably more compact than the mainstream machine guns in the same calibre.
Similarly, KMG762CL with a 14.5” barrel and 6.7 kg empty weight offers higher firepower with the mobility of a generic 5.56 mm belt-fed machine gun.
