In the areas of consumer protection and advertising, we will have protections similar to those in the European Union, but this will require effort and changes in certain approaches. If we want it to be like in the EU countries, each of us must change, including business operators. This was stated by the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia Gevorg Papoyan, presenting for discussion in the first reading at the regular session of the NA Standing Committee on Economic Affairs on February 27 the legislative package “On Amendments and Addenda to the Law on Consumer Protection” and “On Amendments and Addenda to the Law on Advertising” authored by the Government.
The Minister stated that the goal of the projects is to align national legislation with that of the European Union.
Gevorg Papoyan informed that the presented package aims to address problems that particularly concern unfair terms in contracts concluded with consumers, protection of consumer rights in contracts concluded remotely and outside the enterprise’s premises, misleading advertisements containing comparisons, and legal protection measures for consumers in case of product non-conformity.
Gevorg Papoyan presented the definitions and regulations related to the above-mentioned provisions, emphasizing that the purpose of the package is to protect consumer rights.
Deputy Chairman of the Committee Babken Tunyan positively assessed the legislative package, noting that it had been previously discussed. The Deputy Chairman of the Committee urged business entities to familiarize themselves with the proposed regulations in detail before the second reading discussion and to make suggestions or comments, if any.
The legislative initiative can be found on the National Assembly’s official website at this link.
The legislative package received a positive conclusion from the committee. It is planned to include it in the draft agenda of the upcoming regular sessions of the National Assembly.
