Speaking the language should be a requirement to come here in the first place. It was for my wife’s visa. Outside of a few asylum cases you shouldn’t be allowed settlement without passing English language exams. The money we spend on translation is ludicrous.

Seems fair enough, my taxes already fund pretty much everything for everyone, not sure I need to be paying for everyone to learn other languages too

Good. If they want to learn English, get a tutor or go to a private school or use Dualingo. Don’t do it at the taxpayers expense!

We depend on immigrantion for so much and yet we make it so hard for people to come to the UK. And so many Brits who are so hostile and so ignorant. It’s really sad.

Because there are no other resources available to learn one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. If anyone wants to learn, they can. No excuses. And if someone isn’t motivated to do so I think that is very telling.

If I moved to a foreign country I would try to learn the language. If the country demanded I speak the language with some fluency, I’d expect some fucking lessons and resources so it can declare me able to “integrate.”
Knowing English is a good thing for anyone in this country and it’s daft to cut it for anyone really, even if it’s at expense.

Whether you believe these people should know English before they come to the UK, you can’t deny that it’s a public service that benefits us all. Indeed, it probably doesn’t cost that much (you just need an esol teacher in the adult learning centre), but it gives back a lot to society economically (those people who are here are more likely to be able to work than claim benefits), and culturally (it aids integration by forcing people of different cultures together, and joining in with society)
Much more healthy than them sitting at home, claiming benefits, and watching media from back home on their phones.
