As a widespread thaw sets in across Latvia, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has issued warnings about potential hazards, particularly in the western Kurzeme district.

While a yellow alert (potential danger) is in place nationwide for fog on Saturday morning until lunchtime, with driving on regional roads in Kurzeme, around Dobele and Alūksne described as difficult, from Sunday onward the big melt will result in rapidly rising water levels in Kurzeme and some adjacent areas, and the possibility of flooding. In addition as fractured ice piles up it could cause blockages in some waterways, said the LVĢMC.

People in low-lying areas that might be liable to flooding are advised to take suitable precautions.
