BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) – The Teen Environmental Summit gave youth in the Quad Cities area an opportunity to learn how they can help protect the environment Saturday at the Bettendorf Public Library.

The event ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and brought together organizations to share information on local conservation and environmental projects, as well as volunteer and job opportunities.

Attendees share takeaways

“It’s important, especially for teenagers, to be aware of the environment and go to these events to see what they can do to help at their schools or around their community,” attendee Lucy Petrocelli said.

“You learn a lot about conservation efforts that people organize, and it’s good for teens and people in school to be involved in all of that,” attendee Nitya Nallu said.

Crafts, clubs, and community organizations

The summit also featured a craft station where attendees could paint, use stencils, print designs onto T-shirts, or make butterflies out of paper. The event was free and aimed at encouraging teens to get involved in environmental initiatives.

Katie Jackson, Young Adult Librarian at the Bettendorf library, highlighted several local organizations represented at the event.

“The Waste Commission of Scott County and River Action, they do river cleanups. In the Quad City Audubon Society, you can join a club or meet other people and learn how to be an activist and be a conservationalist,” Jackson said.
