No agreement has been reached between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic Party of Kosovo on the election of the country’s new president, following Saturday’s meeting between the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, and the leader of the PDK, Bedri Hamza.

After the meeting, Kurti stated that he still does not have a consensual name for president and that he hopes that there will be a competition for this position next week.

“When there is no possibility of political agreement on consensual proposals, then there will be party proposals,” Kurti said, adding that “party proposals will be agreed upon quickly.”

But the PDK leader has ruled out the issue of a race. Hamza said that if there is a race, “the result is known.”

And Hamza announced that he had offered Kurti an agreement according to which the president would be elected by a PDK proposal, as an attempt to avoid elections and overcome the political deadlock.

“Today, in the second meeting with Kurti, PDK offered a concrete and final opportunity to avoid elections, proposing the election of a president from our ranks, with the aim of guaranteeing institutional stability and overcoming the political deadlock. The PDK leadership assesses that our contribution to this process has been fulfilled,” declared Hamza.

The Kosovo Assembly has until March 4 to elect a new president.
