I’d normally say that enshitification will come for another company, but seeing as it’s Brewdog…

Sucks for everyone who lost their jobs, and all the “punk” shareholders who got absolutely rinsed to enrich the founders.

Hoping and praying for confirmation that the Americans that bought it were Punk. Jello Biafra maybe.

  4. Can the US stop buying our shit. yes Brewdog is dogshit and deserves to die, but why is it always the US buying British companies.

  5. I know Reddit absolutely hates the brand and has wanted it to die for a while, but its pretty crazy that a company as well-stocked across the country can go bust in the way they have.

They were in absolutely tons of pubs, a mainstay of supermarket shelves, and despite what most threads on here would have you believe, a relatively popular choice.

  6. Hopefully this means the last we see of James Watt and his North Atlantic fishing boat

Didn’t they crowd fund a lot of money from fans of the beer z are they getting the money back ?

  8. Astonishing rise and fall.

Ten years from nothing to a £1b valuation.
Ten years from a £1b valuation to (effectively) nothing.

  9. Feel sorry for the 484 people now out of work. Hopefully they continue to sell Hazy Jane in the nearby supermarket, my nearest Brewdog bar was on the cutting board.

  10. I know they were run by gobshites, and their beer went decidedly average – but will miss Brewdog bars when ever I go to a new city and want a safe haven with a good atmosphere and decent music.

Not surprised they were having financial difficulties. Went to the Waterloo ‘branch’ in January. It’s like a brand showroom (AKA iStore) – all style, little content. Apparently, biggest pub in UK. Almost empty of patrons.

Somehow it’ll get worse, but it’s Brewdog and that nob is laughing all the way to the bank now.

  13. >And they said no equity holders – including those who invested in the brewer’s Equity for Punks scheme – would get any return from the deal.

Saw this coming but, damn, investors got rinsed.

Remember, if it’s a private company, your shares are just monopoly money

  14. The great thing about beer is, another independent will just pop up in its place. No matter how hard they try to buy out the market, they can’t stop people from following tradition and brewing local beer.

Brewdog owners might have been dicks, but their story is a great example of what we’d all probably like to do: make a beer everyone liked, have it blow up, make bank, sell the fucker. You’d then be free to rinse and repeat if you fancied it.

  15. Them light weight muricans will do some light version of the beer and get pissed in 2 x 250ml bottles.

  16. Can someone with more insight explain what went wrong? Other than one of the founder being a massive twat I haven’t followed the company’s difficulties.

The beer was all right. It made sense that they went for more mass market appeal brews as their distribution grew. Branding was top notch. Founders being assholes and nickel and diming employees is unfortunately quite common in fast growing companies.

I thought it was cool that they had a special SKU for Aldi, called Ald IPA. Again, spot on branding.

They are likely now dead in the water – their advocates – the equity punk investors – will have a very bitter taste in their mouth and it isn’t the beer. Their more loyal customers are dead to them – and I doubt the brand will ever recover from this.

  18. I normally mock Brewdog for being so punk they invented shares, but in this scenario, genuinely feel bad for the folks who invested who will absolutely lose out.

  19. I’ve not been a massive fan of Brewdog for a while, but haven’t found a replacement for their Alcohol Free Hazy Jane that is as low in calories (46). If anyone knows of a similar beer that is under 50 calories per 330ml I’d be very appreciative of suggestions.

Damn, will never buy it again. I wish I’d known it was my last Elvis Juice.

It’s a shame, the bars were always good, nice staff and decent food. I still like a few of their beers, like Jackhammer and Double Hazy. They ruined their core range to mass produce for supermarkets.

Well that’s £500 down the toilet.  I guess I don’t even keep my 5% off beer thing.  Not that I use it.

  23. Altruistic-Cost-4532 on

I believe they’ve had about £300mil of investment, so if this is 100% for £33m a lot of people lost a lot of money.

  24. Impressive-Bird-6085 on

Even given its existing terrible workplace culture, now a U.S. company has bought it, major U.S. *enshitification* incoming!

  25. Level-Courage6773 on

LOL is that all?! That’s very low for a brand with such widespread regognition. The psychopath at the top will have been disappointed, and I’m glad.

  26. Maybe it’ll be a good thing. They were imitating American ipas after all.

    Elvis was always aids
Punk js either great or awful depending on the brew
Hazy is either great or fantastic
I do miss dead pony. The new one not the old.

  27. yay. Another British company snapped by by the US.

America – Famous for their beers….. not.

  28. Top_Tell9383 on

Went into a Bristol branch and it was £6.99 for a pint of Punk IPA. Insane

And anyone who bought shares in the hundreds or thousands of pounds to get absolute zero other than a finger up the nose.
