The co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has criticized the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
“I do not celebrate missile attacks, regardless of which country they are directed at and who is responsible for them,” Tino Chrupalla told broadcaster RTL on Tuesday. “You cannot celebrate such attacks because civilians are always killed; you can only condemn them.”
“When you see the images right now, you really have to ask yourself whether this is ultimately a good outcome for Israel, and it cannot be in the interests of Germany or Europe,” he added.
The AfD, Germany’s largest opposition party, has sought to build ties with US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
However, Chrupalla criticized Trump over the large-scale offensive launched by Washington and Israel against Tehran on Saturday.
“He started out at as a peace president, but will end up as a war president,” said the AfD co-leader. “Is that what he wants? He will have to explain that to his voters, especially if these attacks and this warfare are unsuccessful.”
Referring to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for global shipping, he added that rising petrol and gas prices would have an impact on the German economy and population.
Chrupalla also warned of refugee flows towards Europe and Germany “if the bombings continue.”
