The US-UK special relationship has always been nonsense. A phrase wheeled out to make us feel special, essentially being seen as the US’s favourite pet.
I just wish we had it in us to actually rebuild our military. Then we wouldn’t have to lean on them for everything.

US – anybodies relationship is not what it was. I wonder why ?

Don’t mistake the justified universal contempt of the IRGC for anyone with an ounce of critical thinking actually believing Trump, Smegbreath and co actually care about the Iranian people. The timing of this is on brand with his usual wag the dog antics with a side helping of helping their mates fiddle the markets
What seems lost on people is had we gone in on day one the same media outlets and opposition figures would be having a moan for participating. Its not the US admin who has to deal with the consequences when they inevitably get bored and de-ramp

The UK should have decoupled from the US decades ago when we were in the EU.

I think Trump is failing to recognise that him aligning himself against Starmer is making Starmer more popular in the UK – not less popular

Well, he’s kind of responsible. And lots of Brits are growing to hate the US, seeing it as a monstrosity of a country, choosing fascism with glee.

Lol all he/his government have done is constantly lash out at us, and other allies, since he’s been in post. Insulting our war dead, amongst other things…. then wonders why we’re not going all Yee Haw into war with them?
And he’s sad we’re not friends anymore? Jog on you fat, orange, demented weirdo.
You want to go bomb the Middle East, picking up that turd with your bare hands again? Go do it.

Maybe if he didnt put tarrifs on us every single time he didn’t get his own way we might have a better relationship with the US. He’s proven himself untrustworthy and no doubt the epstein files are making everyone weary of him as well.

Out of interest, uk sub, what would you think of a CANZUK framework of some kind? In the absence of being part of the EU, and with Trump openly desiring people lay at the feet of his golden throne instead of being treated as partners…
Any reason you would oppose?
3rd or 4th largest economy in the world, 8th? largest population, a military well up there too, even with the currently poor levels of financing in would-be member states (so room for substantial potential), high/similar living standards, law system, academic institutions etc, lots of technological know-how, resource security for many materials.
Would it not be a win-win across the political divide?

The relationship basically boils down to the fact we both speak English.
If America didn’t speak English as a main language, I think we’d have absolutely nothing in common with them.
It gives an illusion of kinship. It would be an alien land otherwise.

I’ve never quite been a fan of the way our relationship with the USA has worked, though I do kinda understand the necessities of the cold war era that led us there.
How much this relationship has annoyed me scales with who is in the hotseat on their side very much, their politics swings in roundabouts. I think it fair to say the current guy has crashed into something and if that can happen then I dont think we can stay on this leash.
The next dude wont magically fix it either no matter how good they are at the job, the peoples attitudes are shifting under their yoke and will be slow to shift back

I married an American, we have a dual citizenship child. The USA taxes its citizens not its residents, and chooses what is and isn’t recognised in the resident’s country. In our case, America doesn’t recognise ISAs and PFIC doesn’t allow for investing in funds not on the American market. Meaning that our son can have a junior ISA but the US will tax it like it isn’t an ISA, and punitively so if he holds something like an index fund. In effect, America’s tax regime puts a British-born citizen and resident at a financial disadvantage compared to other Brits, because America says so.
The only time I’ve seen this “special relationship” is when my now-wife originally applied for her visa. Because she was American, Britain allowed her to have an expedited application. But of course, if we decided to move there, no such courtesy would be given to me.
