HOOVER – After taking a 7-2 loss to Presbyterian Christian and 8-6 defeat to the Loganville Red Devils on Friday, Feb. 27, the Spain Park Jaguars bounced back with two wins to close their time in the Perfect Game High School Showdown’s White division.
Spain Park defeated the Daphne Trojans 7-3 and Dacula Falcons 11-1 in six innings on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Spain Park High School.
However, the Jags had to come from behind against Daphne as the Trojans took a 1-0 lead off a two-out RBI double in the top of the first. They increased the lead to two in the top of the third with a run of three-straight one-out singles, the last of which batted in a run.
The breakthrough came in the bottom of the fourth, when a Rhys Jones walk and Joe Cross single started the inning. Small ball brought both runners home as Nash Davis scored Jones on a groundout and Michael Johnson brought Cross home on a pop-up to tie the game.
Daphne started the fifth with back-to-back doubles to grab a 3-2 lead, but it was the last offense from the Trojans.
A hit batter and a single to begin the sixth brought up Johnson with one out, and an error brought two runs home for the 4-3 lead. More chaos off a two-out Evan Taylor pop fly scored another run, and a walk kept the inning alive long enough for Nathan Byrd to plate two runs with a double and cap the 7-3 win.
