Indonesia’s National Energy Council (DEN) has announced its plans to start its first nuclear power plant between 2032 and 2034 (IDN Financials, 04/03/2026). According to its 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), the project has a planned initial capacity of 500 MW starting in 2032. The possible locations for its development are the island of Sumatra and Kalimantan (Indonesian part of the Borneo Island). The government plans to prioritise SMR technology, as it seems better suited for the electricity systems across the country.
The plan is aligned with Indonesia’s long-term energy transition strategy and its commitment to achieving net zero emissions. It aims to reach 44 GW of nuclear capacity by 2060, of which 35 GW are planned for use in power generation and 9 GW for hydrogen production starting from 2045.
