Azerbaijan announced a temporary closure of its airspace in the south of the country near the border with Iran for 12 hours, based on NOTAM data. The decision takes effect immediately and covers the airspace sector closest to the border area.

Additionally, the government in Baku reported a halt to truck traffic at the Azerbaijan–Iran border.

These measures were introduced after, on the morning of March 5, a drone from Iran struck the airport in Nakhchivan, located less than 30 kilometers from the border with Iran.

During the incident, several people were injured – three airport workers and a passenger who was waiting to board; the terminal building sustained damage.

The Azerbaijani authorities described the attack as a terrorist act, while Iran stated that the Nakhchivan airport was not the target of the strike.

    Positions of the Parties

Statements from both countries indicate different interpretations of the event: Azerbaijan regards the incident as a terrorist act, while Iran denies involvement in the attack and denies that its forces were the targets.

The situation around the region remains tense, and questions of airspace security and border controls are being watched by the relevant authorities.
