A contractor linked to the United States government was arrested on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin after an FBI investigation revealed the alleged embezzlement of $46 million in cryptocurrency from the U.S. Marshals Service, in an operation carried out with international cooperation.

John Daghita was arrested by law enforcement agents Wednesday night on the island of St. Martin, according to FBI Director Kash Patel, in a statement posted on social media. The operation took place in the Caribbean and involved international authorities.

Photos released by the FBI and the St. Martin police show Daghita being led away in handcuffs, with a swimming pool in the background of the arrest location.

The case involves the alleged theft of $46 million in cryptocurrency belonging to the United States Marshals Service.

Images released show money and equipment linked to cryptocurrencies.

Other images released by authorities show a suitcase full of money seized during the operation.

The material was photographed alongside several USB drives and a passport, which was also shown in the images released online.

The photographs were shared by the FBI along with records from the local police in San Martin. The release occurred after the arrest of the suspect, who is accused of diverting millions in cryptocurrency.

The operation involved international cooperation.

According to Kash Patel, the operation that resulted in the arrest was carried out in cooperation with international authorities.

Among the partners involved were the Serious Crimes Unit of the International Cooperation Team of the French National Gendarmerie in Saint Martin.

The Guadeloupe National Gendarmerie Intervention Group also participated in the operation. The joint action led to the location and arrest of the suspect related to the cryptocurrency case.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.

To date, it is unclear how John Daghita gained access to the cryptocurrencies that belonged to the United States Marshals Service.

Authorities have not released details about the method used in the alleged diversion.

In a public statement, Patel affirmed that the FBI will continue working to locate and arrest individuals involved in financial crimes. According to him, the agency will continue working with international partners to hold those suspected of defrauding American taxpayers accountable.
