The Croatian Parliament on Friday approved a government proposal to officially designate the last week of May as the Week of Croats Abroad, a new annual initiative aimed at strengthening ties between Croatia and Croatian communities around the world.

The proposal was supported by a majority of lawmakers and will see a range of cultural, educational and community events organized each year in cooperation with organizations representing Croats living outside the country.

Strengthening Global Croatian Identity

According to the Government of Croatia, the initiative aims to increase the visibility of Croats living abroad within the Croatian public sphere and reinforce a sense of national identity among diaspora communities.

Officials say the week-long program will encourage stronger connections between Croats worldwide, promote mutual understanding and highlight the idea of a shared Croatian identity that extends beyond national borders.

The initiative also seeks to celebrate the cultural contributions and achievements of Croatian communities abroad while fostering greater global unity among Croats.

Events Planned Around Statehood Day

The new commemorative week will take place during the final week of May, coinciding with Statehood Day.

Starting this year, numerous events will be organized in Zagreb and across Croatian counties, in collaboration with diaspora organizations, government institutions, cultural bodies and academic organizations.

During the same week, the government will also convene a session of the Council of the Government for Croats Outside the Republic of Croatia, which brings together representatives of Croatian communities worldwide.

Diaspora Communities to Present Culture and Heritage

The program will feature presentations of cultural heritage and contemporary achievements by Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina, members of Croatian national minorities in neighboring countries and representatives of the wider Croatian diaspora.

Through exhibitions, performances and discussions, organizers hope to showcase the diversity and global reach of Croatian culture.
