In the world of flight simulation, certain regions command a dedicated following. Scandinavia is one of them, where the challenging winter weather and dramatic landscapes make for some of the most engaging flying in the sim. This week, the region’s second-busiest hub (and Norway’s largest) has become the center of a high-fidelity showdown. Orbx has released Oslo Gardermoen (ENGM) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, a project developed by indie creator Finn Hansen.

While Copenhagen Airport typically takes the crown as the busiest in Scandinavia by passenger numbers, Oslo Gardermoen is arguably more vital for virtual pilots who enjoy regional hops. Serving as the primary base for both SAS and Norwegian, it connects the remote northern reaches of the country to the rest of the world.

Standing out in a crowded market

The release enters a market that isn’t exactly lacking in options. Earlier in 2024, Aerosoft released their own “Mega Airport” version of Oslo, designed by the well-known Jo Erlend Sund. That version became a benchmark for immersion, featuring dense terminal interiors and custom soundscapes. By launching now, Orbx and Finn Hansen are offering a distinct alternative.

Where the Aerosoft version leans into “living airport” details, the new Orbx release appears to focus on modern technical accuracy. The developer says the scenery adheres to the current real-world airport layout, an essential detail for pilots using the latest Navigraph charts to navigate the airport’s complex taxiway systems.

The developer has highlighted several areas where this rendition aims to offer a premium experience. The inclusion of three different types of animated jetways ensures that the visual experience matches the specific gate hardware found at the real airport.

The package also includes a custom ecosystem of ground service equipment. According to the developer, the pushback tugs, service vehicles, and airport buses have been modeled to reflect the actual machinery seen at Gardermoen. This is paired with VDGS support via the Nool plugin, providing a functional and accurate docking experience at the gates.

Visually, the airport utilizes 4K PBR textures and updated photoreal ground imagery. The developer says these assets, combined with terminal interior modeling, provide the high-end look pilots expect while maintaining the optimization needed for the new simulator’s engine.
