Ozzie Albies delivered one of the early magic moments of the 2026 World Baseball Classic on Saturday.

With the Netherlands trailing by two runs, and two outs with two on in the bottom of the ninth, Albies launched a three-run walk-off homer to stun Nicaragua. It’s a good thing the Netherlands had Albies playing for their nation.

The Atlanta Braves second baseman isn’t from Europe, though, and so it can confuse fans why he’s suiting up in the Oranje.

    This is how it works.

Why is Ozzie Albies playing for the Netherlands in the WBC?

Ozzie is playing for the Netherlands because he’s from Curacao.

Curacao is a self-governing constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands, in addition to the European country itself, also includes Curacao, Aruba and Sint Maarten, which are all islands in the Caribbean.

The WBC’s eligibility rules essentially have to do with whether a player could be a citizen of a given country. They don’t actually have to be a citizen to suit up for that country.

That’s what allows Albies, and a number of his teammates on the Netherlands roster, to play for them in the World Baseball Classic.

It’s a cool opportunity to represent on an international stage, and Albies is making the most of it.
