With the local elections less than three months away, the main opposition People Power Party(PPP) has adopted a resolution to sever ties with former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The PPP adopted the resolution Monday during an emergency meeting of its lawmakers, convened after Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said he would not apply for the party’s nomination for the June race unless the party formally distanced itself from Yoon.

In the resolution, unveiled by floor leader Song Eon-seog, the party’s lawmakers issued an apology for Yoon’s martial law action on December 3, 2024, saying it was wrong and caused great confusion and disappointment to the public.

The lawmakers then added that they clearly oppose calls for Yoon to return to politics, emphasizing that neither South Korea nor the PPP can, by any means, return to the past.

The resolution said the PPP will refrain from all actions and words that escalate conflict within the party and will seek total unity.
