Olympic gold medallist Ronnie Delany has died at the age of 91.

The middle-distance runner is considered one of Ireland’s greatest athletes, culminating in winning the gold medal in the 1,500m at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.

Still back in 10th with 350m to go, Delany made a final move with 60m to run to win in 3:41.2, an Olympic record by exactly four seconds, beating home favourite John Landy.

He was Ireland’s only Olympic gold medallist between the years of 1932 and 1992, and it is one of only 15 gold medals in Irish history.

In 1956, he became only the seventh man in history to crack the four-minute mile, running 3:59.0 in California.

Other achievements for the Co Wicklow athlete included bronze medal at the 1958 European Championships in Stockholm and gold in the World University Games in Sofia in 1961.
