Romania has approved a request to allow the temporary deployment of United States military personnel and equipment on its territory, according to an announcement by President Nicusor Dan.

Dan stated that the decision was discussed during a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT), adding that the deployment will proceed if it receives approval from the Romanian parliament.

The discussions reportedly focused on the possibility of allowing US forces to use Romanian bases amid the ongoing tensions and conflicts in the Middle East, including developments involving Iran.

Possible deployment to key Romanian bases

According to local reports, the potential deployment could involve around 400 to 500 US personnel along with military equipment.

Among the facilities considered for the deployment are the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base near the Black Sea coast and the Campia Turzii Air Base.

Equipment under consideration reportedly includes aerial refueling aircraft and satellite communication systems, which could be stationed at the Mihail Kogalniceanu base.

Dan emphasized that the deployment would be defensive in nature and carried out within the framework of the Romania–United States strategic partnership.

Parliamentary approval required

For the deployment to take effect, the Romanian parliament must approve the proposal. The mission is expected to be authorized for an initial period of 90 days, with any extension requiring further review by the CSAT.

Broader Security Discussions

During the meeting, which lasted approximately two and a half hours, council members also reviewed developments in the Middle East conflict, the situation of Romanian citizens in the region, and the economic impact of the war, including rising global oil prices.

The session marked the first CSAT meeting since November 24, 2025, when the council last convened to discuss Romania’s National Defense Strategy. (ILKHA)
