ZAGREB, March 12 – Croatia has introduced an innovative app, LearnCro, aimed at teaching the Croatian language to learners at the B1 level. This initiative, launched by the Central State Office for Croats Abroad in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, was unveiled recently.
During the launch, it was highlighted that the app is important as both a communication tool and a vital aspect of cultural identity — a bridge back to one’s roots. The app is poised to serve those who frequently visit their homeland.
LearnCro is intended to complement, not replace, traditional classroom learning. The platform allows users to tailor their learning experience according to individual schedules and goals, promoting a more relaxed approach.
In its first three days on the market, the app garnered about 1,000 downloads, signaling strong enthusiasm for mastering the Croatian language.
While many of the initial users are likely Croats, the app welcomes anyone interested in the language. It is especially designed for foreign workers who wish to learn Croatian, though a basic understanding at the A1 level will be beneficial.
Previous online courses at A1 and A2 levels had drawn significant attention, underscoring the success and demand for such educational tools.
The growth potential is promising, with over 34,000 individuals having already completed earlier courses focused on A1 and A2 proficiency.
LearnCro is accessible through both desktops and mobile devices, featuring an easy registration process. It includes approximately 2,000 audio clips and 2,200 visuals to enhance language retention, offering 80 lessons across 12 thematic units. These activities prioritize vocabulary enhancement while embedding cultural knowledge.
The app currently supports Croatian, English, and Spanish interfaces, with plans to expand options to include German, subject to user demand.
It would be beneficial to expand the application to cover additional levels of proficiency, and there is optimism that this development will occur.
