As a general thaw enters what is hopefully its final stages across Latvia, it is worth noting that a yellow warning for high water levels remains in place across a large part of the country.

A yellow alert (potential danger) issued by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) covers all of the country with the exception of Rīga and several regions along the coast of the Gulf of Rīga on Friday and Saturday, but is lifted from Sunday.

The weather in Latvia will be warm but windy over the weekend, while it will become colder next week, according to forecasts.

The warmest day will be Saturday, when the temperature will reach 10 to 15 degrees Celsius in most districts, but in places in Kurzeme the thermometer could touch 17 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday conditions will be similar but a couple of degrees colder and in Kurzeme there will be more clouds and it will rain a little on the coast, with the possibility of sea mist.

A new national heat record for March 14th is likely on Saturday, as the highest temperature on this date so far was in 2007, when it was 15.3 degrees in Mērsrags.

The weather will become cooler next week. On Monday and Tuesday, the weather in the western and central parts of the country will be cloudy, with rain and even sleet in some places, but in eastern Vidzeme and Latgale the weather will remain mostly dry.
