Stadler FLIRT trains Greater Poland are the focus of a new contract. As reported by Stadler, the deal was signed with the regional authorities of the Greater Poland Voivodeship. It covers up to 20 electric multiple units. The trains will be built in Poland. They are expected to enter service from 2028 in regional and urban rail transport.

The contract is worth around 263 million EUR. It covers an initial order for 10 five-car electric multiple units. It also includes an option for a further 10 trains. The first vehicles are scheduled to enter service in early 2028.

Radosław Banach, chief executive of Stadler Polska said:

We will deliver innovative FLIRT vehicles of the latest generation to Greater Poland – modern and energy-efficient multiple units, of which more than 3,000 have already been sold worldwide in 24 countries. The FLIRT fleet has demonstrated its reliability and comfort for many years.

Meanwhile, more than 650 FLIRT trains have been built at Stadler’s plant in Siedlce, Poland. They were built for operators in 18 countries. Of these, 127 are currently operating on railway networks in Poland. Also, FLIRT is the most widely sold train model produced by Stadler. In Poland, these trains are used by Koleje Mazowieckie, Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna, Koleje Śląskie and PKP Intercity.

The investment is intended to support rail transport in Greater Poland. It is also intended to expand regional engineering capacity. At the same time, engineers from Stadler Polska will design the new trains. This includes teams based in Poznań. The company currently employs around 100 engineers in Poland. About half of them work in Poznań. In addition, Stadler plans to recruit an additional 20 engineers during the year.

The trains use aluminium construction. This is designed to reduce weight and energy consumption. It is compared with conventional steel vehicles. Still, each five-car unit can carry up to 632 passengers. That includes more than 250 seated passengers. Each unit also has a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

Passenger features and ETCS Level 2 equipment

The trains will include low-floor areas. They will also provide step-free access for passengers with reduced mobility. Separately, they will include air conditioning, onboard passenger information systems and Wi-Fi. For example, the safety equipment will include video surveillance, emergency communication systems and defibrillators, as noted by Railway-News. In addition, the trains will be equipped with European Train Control System Level 2.
