The Funchal City Council has established the Municipal Council for Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, an advisory body to the municipality that aims to contribute to the definition of policies in these areas, the local authority announced.

In a statement, the municipal executive (PSD/CDS-PP) emphasises that this body, chaired by the councillor responsible for Equality, Helena Leal, “brings together different institutions and entities with the aim of contributing to the definition and implementation of public policies in this area.”

The Municipal Council for Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination for the four-year period 2025-2029 took office on Monday, in a session chaired by the mayor, Jorge Carvalho.

Quoted in the note, the mayor underlines that “the promotion of equality and respect for diversity must be based on a formative and preventive logic, valuing a society based on respect for all people, regardless of their choices or conditions.”
