The Azerbaijan women’s 3×3 basketball team has won the silver medal at the FIBA 3×3 Champions Cup held in Bangkok over the weekend.
The team defeated the United States women’s national 3×3 basketball team by a tight score of 22–20. Having progressed to the final match, the team lost to the Dutch team with a score of 12–21, as reported by local media outlets.
The Champions Cup is being organised by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
The 3×3 basketball style is a faster, street-style version of traditional basketball, where 3 players are per team on the court, with one substitute member. It is played on one half of a standard basketball court, with both teams aiming for the same basket. Games usually last 10 minutes or end earlier if a team reaches 21 points.
This format is also part of the Summer Olympic Games, with the gold winner of the FIBA 3×3 Champions Cup qualifying for these games, as well as the main competition event of the sport, the FIBA 3×3 World Cup and the Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
