The Trump administration as soon as this week plans to announce that multiple countries have agreed to form a coalition that will escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which runs along the Iranian coast, U.S. officials said. They are still discussing, however, whether those operations would begin before or after hostilities end.
The White House declined to comment on the expected announcement, which could shift depending on battlefield conditions. Publicly, many countries have been noncommittal to such an escort mission until hostilities cease, given the risks involved.

whats the point of a doing an escort at all if it’s done at the end of hostilities?
Whoever joins this coalition will be left holding the bag when the USA declares victory and leaves. Guarantee it

With how some civilian ships have been struck, attempting a freedom of navigation ops while Iran has demonstrated strike capabilities from mainland sounds like a good way to get ground down.
That and the political can of worms, the PR hit, losing ships/personnel, I imagine ”those” countries mentioned in the article gave non-committal answers… Any rational actor would not want to get involved at all..
So multilateralism is good now?
As soon as markets open. They think that all of you are suckers. Tbf a lot of the people are.
They’re gonna escort ships through the strait after hostilities end? Ok.
This was just another headline to try and calm the market before it opened. Doesn’t look like it’s helping though.

I don’t get it, didn’t the US destroy Iran’s military and especially their fleet, like 4 times now? What do they want an international fleet for?
It has been observed this announcement came an hour before oil futures opened. This is not a coincidence.
Shortly after anyone joins, if anyone joins, he’ll say his job is done there and brag about another war stopped. Whoever sings up for this will deal with Iran on their own.
I wonder how much he is planning on charging the ships that need escorted.
Does the coalition know?
Good. The US will win this war because it has to. It is a key part of the grand geopolitical strategy of this administration. There will be no TACO.
The coalition escort model raises an interesting question about rules of engagement. In the Tanker War (1987-88), the US reflagging of Kuwaiti tankers under Operation Earnest Will worked because the threat was relatively contained (mines and small boat attacks). The current situation is fundamentally different: Iran has layered anti-ship capabilities including coastal cruise missiles, fast attack craft swarms, and submarine-launched torpedoes that can create overlapping kill zones across the Strait’s narrowest points.
The real challenge isn’t assembling the coalition, it’s defining what “escort” means operationally. Are escort vessels authorized to strike Iranian coastal radar and missile batteries preemptively if they detect targeting? Because reactive defense alone in a 21-mile-wide chokepoint against saturation attacks is a very different proposition than what worked in the 1980s.
Also worth watching: whether China and India participate or abstain. Both are major Gulf oil importers, and their decision will say a lot about where they see the geopolitical alignment heading.
The coalition of the somewhat willing if there is enough money involved.
