Maybe I’m just seeing what I want to see, but I expect that the PMO believe they better things to be worrying about than this silly petition

Does the PM has to say something evey time the Conservatives are doing something idiotic?
This reeks of a populist attempt to stay relevant.

Why should they say anything? The Order of Canada nomination committee is completely independent from the government so they don’t have to be – and shouldn’t be – involved.
The CPC made this mess, and alienated the Quebec wing of their party while doing so. Why should the PM/LPC get involved?

Im wondering why a national party leader and leader of the opposition would invite debate on an issue like this, especially at a time like this.
Is it a unifying effort at a time when the country needs a united front?
No, it’s actually polarizing.
“The Conservative leader declared last week that Cherry “embodies what it means to be a proud Canadian,” throwing his personal support behind a nomination drive launched by MP Andrew Lawton.
The move was apparently designed to appeal to a nostalgic, culturally conservative base that views Cherry as a plain-spoken patriot victimized by woke cancel culture.”
Pollievre has manufactured an opportunity to divide and polarize Canadians around a manufactured culture war issue.
This is not the kind of leadership this country needs at this (or any time).
Much has been written about how RW populists (ie Smith, Pollievre, Trump, Farage,……) use polarization and division as a strategy for political gain.
Smith was right when she said Pollievre and Trump are “in sync” during a Breitbart interview.
From the linked article;
“It argues that the rising tide of populism in the United States, exemplified by the rhetoric and policies of figures like Donald Trump, is not merely a challenge due to its populist nature but because of its exclusionary tendencies that deepen societal divisions.”
He hasn’t been awarded the Order of Canada because he has a decades-long record of being a bigot. It’s that simple.

Why would Carney say anything when he can just do nothing and let the Conservatives fall on their sword. It’s already causing tensions within their Quebec caucus, and for no real benefit.
Regardless, this isn’t a petition anyways, it’s data harvesting(though that is how modern campaigns are run). If they actually wanted a petition, there’s proper ways to do that.
