The sentiment is admirable but too idealistic; the current state of affairs with an aggressive and imperialistic Russia who are essentially in another Cold War with the West is the reality we’re dealing with. The US can’t be relied on anymore – they rightly wanted Europe to carry more responsibility for its own defence but then swung too far into the crazy. Re-arming, re-strategising, utilising the best parts of our allies and working together, in the hope none of it is ever needed, is prudent and sensible. Frankly, a good chunk of Europe haven’t got the luxury of Ireland, with NATO and nuclear armed powers between them and any aggressor.

When defense spending becomes the primary pillar of every national budget from Lisbon to Warsaw, we are essentially admitting that our capacity for diplomacy has completely eroded. It is a bit of a luxury for Ireland to maintain this high-minded stance given their geography, and I think a lot of people in frontline states would argue that “normalization” is just a synonym for survival when your neighbors are actively rearming. Her point is morally sound we shouldn’t lose our capacity to be horrified but it feels like a sentiment from a completely different era of European history. The tragedy isn’t that we are “accepting” war; it is that we have seemingly run out of any other options that actually work.

I will not accept any kind of moral lecture from someone who has promoted the conspiracy theory that so-called ‘NATO expansionism’ was the cause of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

I appreciate her appeal to international order and whilst I am certain that she is aware that international order has to be enforced at some level I do wonder how she thinks the international order can be enforced through diplomacy. Diplomacy also requires teeth to have meaning so diplomats have tools like sanctions to enforce the peace. She should also then recognize that nations especially authoritarian ones know this and will attempt to circumvent any such measures, building up of diplomatic pressure, political influence, sabotage, capital reserves, and materials but also notably through the application of a short war to enforce their will. So to stand on principle alone simply will not work when the incentive structure favours authoritarians initiating short wars against diplomacy only nations. The “normalisation of war” is not equivalent to preparation against the worst ie attack from authoritarian regimes. A casual glance across the globe suggests that any nation arguing against the preparation against authoritarian attack is not simply sitting on its high horse but is doing so an ivory tower insulated against authoritarian forces on the march.

Humans are mammels, mammels are animals, animals have instincts, instincts are basic they create needs, needs are tiered from basic to the more complex, once a lower tier is completed everybody just begins to complain how they have nothing completed in the level up tier that became the current one.
Wars were always part of humanity is the collective contious that decided after WW2 that no conflicts should exist anymore, or was it the threat of nuclear war (that changed the security tier back to: oh crap i can die at any moment) or was the utter devastation.
Hardly anybody from those days still lives and has a functional brain so now we are in the everybody is special era forgetting that they get to say that because they are protected and/or ideeas are being enforced by someone else for them.
Thing is the barracks are empty and others figured it out and now they are gonna come and take us and our shit since we are pretty much peak decadence aura.
Is the cycle of nature that forgives noone and one paradox: in order to live in a tolerant society you have to be intolerant with intolerance but now the ones that were hoping to become tolerated have become more intolerant is a society fit for endless emotional discussion so there are some simple men with simple basic needs that are gonna come and simplify it for everyone because there is noone left willing to fight to death to enforce rules and ideeas for a society that has all it’s values reversed: strong is weak, wrong is right, woman is man.
