Latvian State Police have scored a major drugs bust, seizing approximately 11 kilograms of cocaine and three kilograms of marijuana during a search at an apartment in Rīga. This is the largest amount of cocaine seized by the State Police since 2019.
The action kicked off on March 8th, when law enforcement officers detained men born in 2000 and 2002. They had not previously come to the police’s attention.
During a sanctioned search, approximately 11 kilograms of cocaine and three kilograms of marijuana were found and confiscated at the residence of the man born in 2002. Meanwhile, a more modest 10 grammes of cocaine and 20 grammes of marijuana were seized at the apartment of the other male suspect.
The value of the seized substances on the illegal market is estimated at around one million euros.
On March 10th, the State Police asked for the suspects to remain in police custody but the court, having assessed the circumstances, did not agree to their detention, but “non-custodial” security measures have been applied.
In connection with the incident, criminal proceedings have been initiated for the unauthorized acquisition, storage, transportation or transfer of narcotics for the purpose of sale or for the unauthorized sale of narcotics, if it was committed by an organized group or if it was committed with narcotics in large quantities. The law provides for imprisonment for a period of five to 15 years, plus other potential sanctions.
