Emergency fine dust reduction measures are in place for Seoul, its surrounding area and South Chungcheong Province on Tuesday, after authorities issued the lowest “attention” level on the four-tier ultrafine dust crisis alert system for the third time this year.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment said on Tuesday that the reduction measures will be in place between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. for Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon, and South Chungcheong Province.

Operation of Grade 5 emission vehicles are restricted in the affected regions and public institutions are required to implement the alternate-day driving system.

The coal-fired power plant in Incheon has to reduce its output to 80 percent, and construction sites and other locations with high emission levels have to adjust their business hours.

The National Institute of Environmental Research forecast the central region and the southwestern Jeolla provinces to observe an ultrafine dust density level of “bad” on Tuesday, ranging between 36 to 75 micrograms per cubic meter.
